In yesterday’s verse, James called God’s People to prayer and praise. Today, he reminds us of the importance of prayer partners, especially in times of illness…
Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord. (James 5:14)
Oil was believed to have medicinal properties in those days, so this verse reminds us of the importance of seeking medical treatment for illness. God has the power to heal, but He often chooses to work through the resources He has already put in place for us.
When we are sick, it means that something in our body is “broken.” Every time we get better, it is a miracle from God! A cold clearing up is a miracle! A virus or infection clearing up is a miracle! When a bone that was broken becomes whole again, that is a miracle! When the skin grows back after being cut, that is a miracle! Recovery from surgery is a miracle! If the process of any of these healings involves us taking medication or natural remedies, it is no less of a miracle.
This verse also reminds us of the importance of prayer. We can and should pray for ourselves, but God loves it when we pray for each other. He can do anything He wants to do, so He has the power to heal us without prayer, but He loves to work through the prayers of His people! Any Born Again Christian has direct access to God through prayer, so we can benefit from the prayers of any Christian. However, there is something special about calling on our church leaders to pray for us in times of special need.
Today’s Good News is that God has given us doctors and pastors to minister to us in times of illness.
Now, go share the Good News…
