Worldly Wisdom

August 7, 2018

James is contrasting two kinds of wisdom:  worldly wisdom vs. heavenly wisdom.  In verse 14 he described what worldly wisdom leads to – jealousy and selfish ambition…

This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.  (James 3:15)

If you want a sample of the world’s wisdom, just turn on a daytime or latenight TV talk show.  You will hear platitudes that may sound good on a surface level, but for the most part they will be devoid of any spiritual content – unless, of course, they are espousing a type of spirituality that is opposed to Christianity.

Worldly wisdom tends to be me-centered, which is why it will make you jealous and selfish if you follow it.  It is manufactured here on earth by the spiritual forces that currently control this world system.  On the other hand, heavenly wisdom is Christ-centered.  It is made in Heaven by our loving Father God, and is delivered to earth to be used by the people who have embraced His Son as Saviour, and are filled with His Holy Spirit.  Following it will not be taking the easy road, but it will lead to a life that more fulfilling.

Today’s Good News is that godly wisdom leads to godly living.

Now, go share the Good News…
