Yesterday, James referred to the tongue as a restless evil, full of deadly poison. Today he points out how we use the tongue for two purposes that are diametrically opposed to each other…
With it we bless our Lord and Father, and with it we curse people who are made in the likeness of God. (James 3:9)
It upsets me when a husband and wife divorces, and they both say their children are their top priority. If that is true, they should do what’s in the best interest of the children. The best thing for kids is to be raised in a Christ-centered home where mom & dad love each other and are committed to each other. So please don’t claim to be putting your children first until you’ve exhausted all reasonable attempts to make your marriage work for their sake.
That example came to mind when I was seeking God’s guidance on how to illustrate today’s verse. We use our tongue to declare our love for God and to sing His praises at church. We use that very same tongue to express our disdain for other people whom He has created in His image. God loves every person that He created, including the people who are rejecting Him. If we truly love God, then we will care about the people He cares about.
A mature Christian possesses a consistent tongue. If I claim to love my kids I should not dis their mother, and if I claim to love God I should not dis the people He created in His image.
Today’s Good News is that the Holy Spirit can help us love the people that God loves.
Now, go share the Good News…
