Untamed and Poisonous

July 31, 2018

In yesterday’s verse, James said that mankind can tame every kind of beast, bird, reptile, and sea creature.  Today he will finish that statement…

but no human being can tame the tongue.  It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison.  (James 3:8)

Imagine if we had tongue obedience classes like we have dog obedience classes.  We can teach our dogs to sit and stay, but it’s much harder to teach our tongues to be still.  The tongue is not just an untamed animal – it’s a poisonous untamed animal.

Poison is deceptive, because it starts by working secretly and slowly, and then it kills.  It only takes one bite for a snake to kill its victim.  It only takes one comment to wound a person’s feelings.  It only takes one comment to kill a friendship.  Most Christians would never dream of hurting a person physically, but with one sentence we can damage someone emotionally.

We cannot tame the tongue, but thankfully Christ’s Holy Spirit can.  The question is whether or not we will allow Him to do that.  If we are tuned in to His voice, He will give us a gentle reminder when we are about to say something that is better left unsaid, but the decision is ultimately ours.  Will we remain quiet and listen to the Holy Spirit, or will we let loose our tongue and make everyone else listen to us?

Today’s Good News is that the Holy Spirit can tame our tongue.

Now, go share the Good News…
