James 3:7-8 are two verses that need to go together to get the big picture of the passage. Therefore, I will reserve for tomorrow my commentary on what James is saying about the tongue. For today, I will point out one simple thing based on verse 7…
For every kind of beast and bird, of reptile and sea creature, can be tamed and has been tamed by mankind, (James 3:7)
I have had some cats for which this does not apply, but that’s another story!
In Genesis 1:28, God gave mankind dominion over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air and every living thing that moves on the earth. That does NOT give us a right to be cruel to animals. (Proverbs 12:10 says that a wise man is kind to his animal.) However, man is certainly above the animals in God’s creative order. Animals were created for man’s purpose and use. I point this out because our pagan culture views man as nothing more than a complex animal. (If you embrace evolution, it will “naturally” lead to this conclusion.) Some people even view animals on a higher level than humanity. I think it’s fair to say that animals have more rights today than babies in the womb.
The Bible teaches that man is above the animal kingdom because only man has been created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27). It was for humanity that Jesus died. We are God’s masterpiece – the crown jewel of His creation.
Sin has tarnished that image, making it more difficult to see, but when we accept Jesus as our Saviour His Holy Spirit comes to live in us. He starts working right away on cleaning us from the inside out, restoring God’s image, and making our lives shine for the glory of God!
Today’s Good News is that we are God’s special creation, made in His image, which Jesus can restore for the world to see.
Now, go share the Good News…
