This is one of those sections in James where it’s a challenge to give commentary on one verse a day, because several verses need to be considered together to get the big picture of the passage. Nevertheless, we will still take it one verse at a time, focusing on a particular aspect each day, until we are in a position to summarize the section.
In verse one of chapter two, James warned us not to show partiality…
For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, (James 2:2)
Okay, we will pause there for today, and just think about that scenario for a moment. How would you react to each man when he walks into church?
Many Christians would have a difficult time accepting the poor man in shabby clothing. But you know, some Christians would also have a hard time accepting the rich man in the nice clothes. We have a tendency to gravitate toward people who are a lot like us – people who walk in similar circles to us. If the person is too polished, we feel uncomfortable around them. If the person is disheveled, we also feel uncomfortable around them.
The Gospel has a wonderful way of bringing people together in the Church who are very different from each other, and come from different backgrounds. If we are serious about growing as a Christian, and putting our faith in action, we need to learn how to get along with people who are not like us. Some of them may be much richer than we are. Some of them may be much poorer. Some of them may even smell bad. But God brings them into our churches to love them, and to minister to them, and to introduce them to Jesus.
Today’s Good News is that the message of the Gospel is for everyone, regardless of our so-called social status.
Now, go share the Good News…
FAITH in ACTION!
