In today’s verse, James introduces a topic that will become an important theme in his letter…
If anyone thinks he is religious and does not bridle his tongue but deceives his heart, this person’s religion is worthless. (James 1:26)
James was very concerned about a Christian’s speech. (He will discuss it at length in Chapter 3.) In this verse he warns us that our tongue can ruin our testimony! We can go to church and Bible Study, filling our mind with all sorts of Bible knowledge, and still ruin our reputation by what we say! It can take us several years to win the trust of people, but it only takes one comment to lose it.
James has been stressing the importance of being doers of the Word, and not hearers only. Part of doing the Word is learning how to control our tongue and speaking kindly to others. If you claim to be a Christian but speak words that are unkind or vulgar, you are being a poor model of Christianity. If you think otherwise, you are deceiving yourself.
Today’s Good News is that God’s Holy Spirit can help us control our tongue.
Now, go share the Good News…
