We have several cookbooks, and they are filled with lots of great recipes. In fact, one book contains meal ideas for every day of the year. I think we have used about two of them! Perhaps we should be doers of the book, and not readers only.
In yesterday’s verse, James encouraged us to receive God’s Word with meekness. In today’s verse, he tells us what the next step should be…
But be doers of the Word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
This is one of the key verses in James. It is also one of the classics!
Many Christians love to attend Bible studies and talk about what we should be doing. But if we don’t go out and do those things, we might as well not show up at the Bible study.
Salvation is a free gift – it cannot be earned – but the Bible teaches that God’s People will be rewarded for faithful service. I believe our reward will be based less on how well we know the Bible, and more on how well we obey the Bible.
If we are not careful, we can end up treating the Bible like a cookbook. We leaf through its pages, looking for passages that catch our attention and appeal to our taste, but we don’t follow the instructions we read there.
Notice James says that if we only hear the Word, we deceive ourselves. (It's like thinking we can be nourished just be reading the recipes in the cookbook.) We may think we’re doing well by going to church every Sunday and hearing a sermon. But God is looking for us to put that sermon into action throughout the week.
The title of our Summer Series on James is Faith in Action! To put our faith in action, we need to DO what the Bible tells us to do. To get the most out of this series, let’s commit to be doers of the Word, and not hearers only.
Today’s Good News is that we can put our faith in action, simply by doing what the Bible says we should do.
Now, go share the Good News…
FAITH in ACTION!
