Yesterday, James told us that every good and perfect gift comes from our Heavenly Father. Today, he will give us more insight into why God lavishes these gifts on us…
Of His own will He brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of His creatures. (James 1:18)
This devotional has been a difficult one to write, because this verse is not easy to explain. I don’t pretend to have it all figured out, but here is my general understanding of verse eighteen:
Remember that James is writing to believers. When he talks about God bringing us forth, I believe He is referring to our spiritual birth – also known as our new birth or second birth. We Christians are said to be “Born Again.”
Notice that God brought us forth of His own will, and by the Word of truth. We did nothing to initiate our own salvation. We didn’t even know we needed to be saved. It was God’s will for us to be saved. He wanted to adopt us as His own children. He used the Word of God – the message of the Gospel – to reach us. The Word can also refer to Jesus, who is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Therefore, we have been Born Again of God’s will, and by our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
The firstfruits were the beginning of the harvest. In the Old Testament, the nation of Israel was taught to bring their firstfruits as an offering to the Lord. They were offered in gratitude to God for His provision, and also in faith that those firstfruits were only the beginning of the harvest. God would continue to provide.
As Christians, we are God’s firstfruits. He would like us to offer ourselves back to Him in gratitude for what He has done, and in faith that He will continue to take care of us and provide for us.
Today’s Good News is that we are God’s beloved children. That is why He lavishes His good and perfect gifts on us.
Now, go share the Good News…
