A Long Weekend

May 18, 2018

Before the month of May draws to a close, our two countries will take turns enjoying a long weekend.  Monday, May 21 is Victoria Day in Canada.  Monday, May 28 is Memorial Day in the United States.

Long weekends are a blessing, because we get tired from our labours, and it’s good to take a longer break from time to time.

The first Person in history to take a weekend off was our Creator.  It wasn’t a long weekend, or even a two-day weekend.  It was one day at the end of the week.

And on the seventh day God finished His work that He had done, and He rested on the seventh day from all His work that He had done.  (Genesis 2:2)

It’s important to understand that God didn’t rest because He was tired.  He is our omnipotent Creator who never slumbers nor sleeps (Psalm 121:3-4).  He rested because His work was complete.  In Genesis 1, we read seven times that His work was “good.”

Man’s sin in the Garden of Eden created more work for God.  Jesus came to do the work of saving us, and when that work was completed on the Cross, He declared, “It is finished.”  (John 19:30)

If you are a Born Again Christian, you have Christ’s Holy Spirit living in you.  He is working on you to make you more like Jesus, and when the time is right, that work will be completed, too.

So enjoy your long weekend, whichever side of the border you are on, and know that the world will be in good hands.  While you are resting, God will be working, and it will be very good.

Today’s Good News is that God is at work, carrying out His will for your life and for this world.
