Practicing Patience

April 14, 2018

(Part #4)

In this series, we are studying nine character qualities of Jesus.  It’s impossible to rate them from one to nine because all of His qualities are perfect.  But from my human point of view, His patience is one of His most remarkable qualities.  (I know how difficult it is for me to be patient.)

He was patient with His disciples, who often missed the point of His teaching.  He was patient with Peter, who denied Him three times on the night He was arrested.  He was patient with His executioners, asking His father to forgive them because they did not know what they were doing.  He was patient with Thomas, who was slow to believe that He had risen from the dead.  He was patient in suffering, never lashing out in anger or revenge.

Jesus is still being patient today.  Christians often lament the fact that Jesus hasn’t returned yet to get us out of this mess, but Peter explains that He is being patient.

The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise as some count slowness, but is patient toward you, not wishing that any should perish, but that all should reach repentance.  (2 Peter 3:9)

My dad has often said he is glad that Jesus didn’t return the day before he got saved.  Every day new people are getting saved and joining the Family of God.  Jesus is patiently waiting for more, but eventually – and it could be very soon – this world will reach a point of decadence where enough is enough, and the end must come.  Are you ready for the coming of the Lord?  What about your family, friends, neighbours and co-workers – are they ready for the return of Christ?

Be patient, therefore, brothers, until the coming of the Lord.  See how the farmer waits for the precious fruit of the earth, being patient about it, until it receives the early and the late rains.  You also, be patient.  Establish your hearts, for the coming of the Lord is at hand.  (James 5:7-8)

In 1 Corinthians 13:4 Paul writes, “Love is patient and kind…”  I like how those two qualities go hand-in-hand.  Showing patience is an act of true love.  It doesn’t come naturally to you and me; it is something we need to practice as we seek to follow the example of Christ.

Of course, a devotional on patience would be incomplete without mentioning how patient Jesus is with me.  I am slow to learn and quick to fail Him, and yet still He goes on loving me.

I love Jesus’ Patience.

Today’s Good News is that Jesus is patiently waiting for more people to get saved.  Make sure you accept Him as Saviour, before your time runs out.
