Peace! Be Still!

April 13, 2018

(Part #3)

One day Jesus and His disciples were in a boat, when they were suddenly hit by a terrible storm.  What was Jesus doing while the storm was raging?  He was sleeping in the boat!  They woke Him up and actually questioned if He cared about them.  (You can read the story in Mark 4:35-41.)  He spoke to the wind and the waves, “Peace!  Be still!” and immediately all was calm.

Why was Jesus asleep in that storm?  It wasn’t because He didn’t care.  It was because He wasn’t afraid.  He didn’t fear the storm, because He knew that He was stronger than the storm.  If we stay close to Jesus we don’t need to be afraid.  On this side of Heaven we will still go through some storms, but we can be at peace in the midst of the storm...

“Peace I leave with you; My peace I give to you.  Not as the world gives do I give to you.  Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid.”  (John 14:27)

The world’s peace is fragile and temporary, as we know from the numerous peace treaties that have been broken throughout history.  The peace that Jesus offers is a lasting peace that takes away our fear.

Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.  (Romans 5:1)

When we accept Jesus as our Saviour we enjoy peace with God, because Jesus has paid our penalty and we know that our sins are forgiven.  When we are at peace with God, we are then in a position to be at peace with others.

You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.  (Isaiah 26:3)

Christ’s peace is perfect because it lasts.  You could say that it covers the three time zones of life:

(1) Jesus gives us peace about the past.  It doesn’t matter who you are or what you have done.  It doesn’t matter how sinful you have been, or how much you have messed up your life.  If you confess your sin to Jesus, He will forgive you and give you a fresh start.  So if you are a Christian, please don’t keep beating yourself up over the past.  If your Creator and King can let it go, then you need to let it go, too.

(2) Jesus gives us peace about the present.  We don’t need to be afraid of what is happening today.  Jesus can give us peace in our hearts, even though a storm is raging around us.

(3) Jesus gives us peace about the future.  We don’t need to be afraid of what’s ahead.  We can face the future with confidence, knowing that Jesus will be with us forever.

I love Jesus’ Peace.

Today’s Good News is that you can find true, lasting peace in your relationship with Jesus.  You don’t need to be afraid – even if you’re in a storm – because He’s right there with you in the boat.
