Jesus Loves Me, This I Know!

April 11, 2018

(Part #1)

Jesus loves me, this I know, for the Bible tells me so!

These words are part of a song that many children have learned in Sunday School, but we should not just think of it as a children’s song.  They are words that adults should take to heart, because adults seem to find it more difficult (than children do) to believe that Jesus loves them.

Why do we doubt Jesus’ love for us?  I think there are three main reasons.  First, it’s because most people love us conditionally, so Jesus’ unconditional love is difficult to comprehend.  We have nothing else on earth to which we can liken it.  Second, we are very much aware of our own sinfulness.  How could someone who knows everything about us possibly love us?  Third, we suffer.  If Jesus truly loves us, why does He allow bad things to happen to us?  Let’s address these three reasons in order.

First, Jesus is the Son of God, which means that He is one of a kind!  He is not like all the other people in your life who place conditions on their love.  He is the only perfect Person, which means He is the only Person who can love you with a perfect love.

Second, His perfect love flows from His goodness, and is not dependent on our goodness.  Again, this makes Him unlike anyone else we know.  We tend to fall in love with people who have qualities that are attractive to us, but Jesus’ love is not dependent on our attractiveness.  Romans 5:8 says that God shows His love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Third, we suffer because we live in an imperfect world – a consequence of man’s rebellion in the Garden of Eden.  When we suffer, it may feel like God has stopped loving us, but in reality, His love is what will get us through the suffering.  I encourage you to get your Bible and read Romans 8:35-39.  The Apostle Paul makes it clear that nothing can separate us from the love of God.  (If you end up being separated from Christ, it will be by your own choice.)

Jesus loves you so much that He died on the Cross to pay the penalty for your sin.  If you confess your sin and accept Him as your Saviour, you will live forever in Heaven where there will be no more suffering.

I love Jesus' Love.
