On February 21, the world lost a great man. At the age of 99, Billy Graham was called Home to Heaven. Even though we saw this day coming, it’s hard to believe he is no longer with us. (Unless you’re more than 99, Billy Graham has always been a part of your world.) There are many things I respect about this servant of the Lord. I would like to share three of them with you…
First, Rev. Graham believed the Bible. He believed it to be God’s inerrant, infallible Word. He preached with authority because he prefaced his statements with three simple words: The Bible says. He didn’t question the Bible, and he wasn’t ashamed or embarrassed about anything the Bible says.
Second, Pastor Graham pointed everyone to Jesus. He never wanted his ministry or his organization to be about himself. As well-known as he was, it wasn’t his goal in life for people to know who he was. It was his mission for people to know Jesus, and to accept Him as their Lord and Saviour.
Third, Dr. Graham always kept his message simple. Jesus loves you. Jesus died for you. You can be forgiven. You can have eternal life. His message stayed consistent through the years, because God doesn’t change, and neither does His Word.
In Mark 16:15 Jesus said, “Go into all the world and proclaim the Gospel to the whole creation.” For about seven decades Billy Graham did just that, traveling around the world, sharing the Good News about Jesus. Now it is our turn. Now it is our time to carry the torch, and spread the Gospel.
As we tell people about Jesus, let’s remember these three things: Stick to what the Bible says. The world doesn’t need to hear our opinions; it needs to hear God’s truth. Direct people to Jesus. It doesn’t matter if people remember our names; they need to call upon His Name. Keep it simple. Tell them that Jesus loves them, and can save them from their sin.
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)
Billy Graham preached that simple Gospel message to millions of people. He was equipped by God for a special task. Most of us will not reach that large of an audience, but God has given each believer our own mission field. Let’s work together to send that message loud and clear all around the world like Billy did. Now, go share the Good News…
